Ms. Chris Charlton (Hamilton Mountain, NDP) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-357, An Act to amend the Canada Pension Plan (arrears of benefits).

She said: Madam Speaker, these last few years have been incredibly difficult for seniors. They have worked hard all their lives and played by the rules. However, now their retirement savings are threatened through no fault of their own, but because of downturns in the economy and employers who are trying to avoid their pension obligations.

On Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians gathered at cenotaphs and Legions to honour the living, remember the fallen and thank currently serving Canadian Forces personnel.

But on Nov. 5, for the second year in a row, veterans organized a protest against the federal government to fight for better disability benefits and more support.

Clearly, there is a deep chasm between the government’s lip service to supporting our troops, and its failure to act on the key issues of concern to veterans.

Ms. Chris Charlton (Hamilton Mountain, NDP): Mr. Speaker, petitions continue to pour in from my riding of Hamilton Mountain, all of which address the urgent need for a national pharmacare program in our country. The petitioners point out that our goal ought to be a national drug plan that would enable all Canadians to enjoy equitable access to medicines while at the same time control the rising cost of drugs.

Dear Friends,

This is my first chance to express my gratitude for your messages of condolence and support on the passing of my friend and leader, Jack Layton.  His wife, Olivia Chow, his children, and all of us in his NDP family drew strength from your outpouring of love.  Thank you!

I am determined to keep Jack’s legacy alive by working to help realize his dream of social, economic and environmental justice for all Canadians.
