Chris Charlton
Member of Parliament, Hamilton MountainLabour
Deputy Critic Finance
- Chris Charlton was first elected to the House of Commons as the MP for Hamilton Mountain in 2006, and was re-elected in 2008.
- She is the NDP Critic for Labour and Canada Post as well as the Deputy Critic for Finance. She also sits on the NDP Caucus Executive, and is the Party’s Deputy Whip.
- Early in 2009, Chris introduced the NDP’s comprehensive motion on EI reform which was passed by the House of Commons on March 10, 2009.
- As the NDP Seniors Critic from 2006 to 2008, Chris tabled the NDP’s Seniors Charter, which was adopted by the House of Commons on June 20, 2006.
- Chris was voted one of the Best Up-and-Comer MPs by MPs and Parliament Hill staff of all Parties in May 2006, and was voted Runner Up as Best Constituency MP in the 2008 survey.
- In 2007, she was nominated for the Hamilton YWCA Women of Distinction Award.
- Chris has deep community roots in Hamilton. Prior to being elected, she was active with the Hamilton and District Labour Council, the Concession Street Business Improvement Association, the Hamilton Health Coalition, and Environment Hamilton. As well, she was a member of the Hamilton Spectator Community Editorial Board, a frequent panelist on the Michael Coren Show, and a regular commentator on Cable 14’s “The Opinionators”.
- Chris has a strong background in politics, having served as an Ontario Legislature Intern in 1989 before working first as a civil servant and then as a senior political aide at Queen’s Park.
- Immediately prior to being elected, Chris worked as the Director of Government and Community Relations at the national office of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.
- She has a B.A. in English and Political Science from the University of Western Ontario, where she won the academic Gold Medal for her field of study. She also has an M.A. in Political Science from McMaster University.
- Chris lives on Hamilton Mountain with her husband, Brian Charlton, who is a former NDP MPP and Ontario Cabinet Minister.
